Highlights of Success
Retreats/Camps: Camp Safe Haven
- Never a fee to an HIV+ youth or family to participate
- Over 1,000 youth served since 1994
- Camp Safe Haven Martha’s Vineyard only “community based” program in the nation
- One of only a few retreat programs for HIV+ youth ages 14-18 in the nation
- Opened USA/UK exchange for youth with HIV in 2011
- Camper/Counselor ratio: 2 counselors per camper
- Many former campers now participate as volunteers
- Many campers have provided HIV education to high schools and various other venues through Safe Haven Speaking engagements
- Received grant funding from prestigious foundations such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, MAC AIDS Fund, Broadway Cares, Altrusa International, Ronald McDonald House Charitable Foundation, and many other private and corporate sponsors
- Participants have attended from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Bermuda since 1994
Education: Youth Futures International “Serve, Learn & Empower!”
- Educated community of Dominase Ghana, West Africa on public health issues of malaria, cholera, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, physical fitness and substance abuse
- Due to YFI youth providing vitally important female empowerment workshops to adolescent females, teen pregnancy rate showed distinct reduction in 2011
- Students have participated from the states of Colorado, Washington, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Mexico, Florida, Nebraska, Texas, California, Michigan, and South Carolina
- Students earn 110 service learning/community service hours applicable towards their high school requirements
- 100% successful program completion rate for all enrolled students
- 5 alumni now serve on the ‘student alumni committee’ providing support to new participants
- Bosnia Herzegovina opening in 2012 due to inspiration and leadership from two Bosnian immigrant students now living in the United States
- Ghana program opened due to inspiration and dedication of high school student from Colorado who now serves as an assistant program director
- 3 alumni now serve as assistant program directors.
General:
- Provided resources for 14-year-old Ghanaian girl to have life saving open-heart surgery in 2006. Without such provision, it was confirmed from physicians that the young lady would not have survived. She is currently healthy and thriving and pursunig an education and career in medicine. Her education is being financed directly through the generosity of a long time Safe Haven friend and supporter.
- Covered for complete funeral costs and organized all funeral and final logistics for mother of two from Springfield, MA who lost her battle to HIV/AIDS
- Recognized privately and publicly on stage by Sir Elton John at concert in Amherst, MA-1997
- Safe Haven Project CEO Dave Butler installed as honorary Chief in Ghana West Africa-2005
- Safe Haven Project CEO and other members provide motivational lectures to approximately 10,000 youth around the United States annually
- Featured on many media outlets throughout the United States, England and Africa including but not limited to; NBC Evening News, CNN, MSNBC News with Brian Williams, Montel Williams Show, Maury Povich Show, Chronicle, CH 4 UK, TV Africa, New England Cable News, and many local television, radio, and newspaper outlets.
